Non Motorised Transportation (NMT) brings compelling arguments in the distressing times of climate impact and global warming and, as a cleaner solution, it largely contributes in creating a sustainable habitat with lesser carbon footprint in the atmosphere. Largely seen as an environmentally friendly option, NMT has increasingly been promoted all over the world.
Many observers have pointed out that the transport sector in many parts of the world including India are primarily auto-oriented which has given overemphasis to moving vehicles rather than the people. The traffic system in our cities has been designed in such a way that primarily promotes increasing use of automobile vehicles which often overlooks the interests of people who use non-motorised means for earning livelihood and short route transportations.
